Producer note: Co-director Aubert de Villaine described 2004 as "not an easy vintage. There was oidium, mildew, botrytis and hail plus it was absolutely necessary to control yields and then make sure you sorted carefully. It required an extra three days to harvest simply because of the additional sorting work that was required However, what was left after the sorting was positively first rate. Good early season weather coupled with the stored vine energy reserves from the small 2003 crop made for a big, and early, bunch set despite all of the intensive debudding work that we did. May and June were hot and saw the worst outbreak of oidium the Côte has seen in some years. It's common to see it affect chardonnay but relatively rare in pinot yet so it was necessary to treat regularly. The flowering occurred in the middle of June and led to very large bunches with big berries. We had less of a problem with bunch size because most of the domaine has older vines which tends to control vigor well. Among the younger vines though we did drop some fruit because potential yields were higher than we found acceptable. July and August were cool and there were isolated outbreaks of botrytis in the damper sectors of some vineyards. Between the delayed maturity levels caused by the cool weather and the various vine maladies, the prospects for the harvest as of late August were looking pretty gloomy. As if things weren't bad enough, on August 23rd much of the Côte was hit by a serious hail storm and certain vineyards were hit very hard. Here in Vosne we had some damage but most of it was limited to the lower portions of Romanée St. Vivant and Grands Echézeaux. As if by divine providence, beginning on August 25th, we had 6 weeks of unbroken ideal weather th
